In 2005 The International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), in conjunction with Porsche Motorsports North America (PMNA) and Michelin, created the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge designed for Porsche GT3 Cup race cars.

The series allows amateur and semi-professional drivers, those who do not make their living in motorsports, to compete in a professional environment as part of select American Le Mans Series weekends. This season drivers will have the opporuntiy to race again at Sebring, Miller Motorsports Park, Mid-Ohio, Mosport, Petit Le Mans and Laguna Seca with an additional race schedule at Indianapolis as a support race at the F1 Grand Prix.
